Controversy Around Door Darshan's Iconic Logo
April 24, 2024

Why in News? Recently, Door Darshan's (DD) logo colour was changed rom ruby red to saffron in the middle of election process striggering criticism from opposition who accused the public broadcaster of adopting a colour associated with the ruling BJP.

Evolution of DD Logo- An experimental broadcast of DD started in 1959, daily transmission began in 1965 as part of All India Radio and the TV service was extended to several states in 1975. In those days of black and white transmission, the first logo, ‘DD Eye’ was colour-agnostic. Satyam Shivam Sundaram was its tagline. The logo was designed by Devashis Bhattacharyya of the National Institute of Design (NID) and was chosen by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi (also Minister for Information & Broadcasting). The original design was fine-tuned through the 1980s and 1990s. RL Mistry who animated the still logo, shot copies from various angles, and rotated them to create the final form of the DD Eye. The tagline was removed in the later adaptations. It was only during the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi that the logo went colour orange or saffron against a dark green background (matching the colours of National Flag). The logo along with DD tune composed by sitar virtuoso Pandit Ravi Shankar and master shehnai player Ustad Ali Ahmed Hussain Khan(which was aired for the first time in 1976)went on to achieve iconic status with the audience.

Response of DD on Allegations of Colour Change- DD said the change was only one of visual aesthetic, and officials pointed out that when the broadcaster went all-colour in the early 1980s, the logo was saffron on a green background.
